One day, the Glovers go to the beach for a day off. They were excited but Big Bill made a joke and saw nothing but sand and water but Brenda, Little Bill, April, and Bobby knew he was joking.
And while Big Bill just wants to relax, the children want him to join in with them and have some fun. Little Bill tried to take a cooler but it was heavy so Big Bill took it instead and Little Bill was impressed. Little Bill made a list of things to do on the beach and told it to Big Bill, who felt a little surprised and puzzled. But Big Bill wanted to relax and lay under the umbrella, read, and snooze. Little Bill searched for a spot until Brenda showed him where they are and it was a great spot.
Then as Brenda and Big Bill set up a blanket, Little Bill went under it and felt like a lump. Brenda saw the blanket’s big old lump and Big Bill saw it was moving. He poked it as Little Bill and laughed and snickered himself silly as he moved left and right and kept laughing and laughing himself silly as Big Bill finally catches him and Little Bill revealed himself as the lump. Then he, Bobby, and April all grab onto Big Bill and pretended he was a beach monster as they laughed and laughed themselves silly and roared while Brenda laughed herself silly. And before they could go in the water, Big Bill set up some beach ground rules.
Big Bill decided to a little relaxing still and read a book called The Big Sea. Little Bill needed his beach ball to be blown and Little Bill told Big Bill to blow hard like the wolf did in the Three Little Pigs and Little Bill showed him how it is done and Big Bill did what Little Bill. Bobby and April called to Little Bill to go swimming. They go swimming at first and Little Bill told Brenda that waves were going to catch them so they hopped away from the waves. Then they play games such as catch. Little Bill then played catch with Brenda and made Big Bill in the middle and made sure that Big Bill didn’t catch the ball.
Big Bill felt tired out but Little Bill wanted build sand castles and Brenda agreed, so they did. Little and Big Bill built a sandcastle and said it was looking pretty good and go exploring for shells. After building a sandcastle, Little Bill found driftwood for the drawbridge and did a sound effect and when Big Bill pretended to be a horse going across, he suggested a seahorse.
Little Bill liked the idea and imagined himself in the ocean on a seahorse swimming with the fish. As the fish and even an octopus and a jellyfish greeted Little Bill, he rode the seahorse to an underwater castle as some fish arrive to make one big fish. Little Bill was snapped out of his imagination when April and Bobby helped him make the sandcastle bigger.
As Big Bill lies down to finally try to relax, Little Bill suggests to his siblings that they bury their father in the sand. So Little Bill, April, and Bobby quietly snuck over to Big Bill and put sand on him and buried him as the kids laughed and laughed themselves silly. Although he pretends to protest, Big Bill actually enjoys not having to worry about moving and Brenda funnily refused to help Big Bill. When he was fully buried, it was lunchtime and Big Bill preferred to be in the sand for a while and falls asleep while everybody else has lunch.
Little Bill asks Brenda why Big Bill doesn't want to play, and she explains that his father has had a long, busy day and is tired from the long drive to the beach and did all the things he did for everybody else. When he realizes how much he appreciates all the things Big Bill does without being asked, Little Bill goes over to where Big Bill is lying and he ask some beach things but all of them to which Little Bill said, “no,” to and offers to read to him to make it up to him so they can relax together.
